Philip Nel is a University Distinguished Professor and Graduate Faculty member in the Department of English at Kansas State University, where he also directs the Program in Children's Literature. He holds a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University (1997). His research focuses on Children's Literature, American Studies, Comics, Cultural Studies, Biography, and Gender and Women's Studies. Nel has authored or co-edited over 20 books, including critical studies of Dr. Seuss, Crockett Johnson, and J.K. Rowling, as well as anthologies like Tales for Little Rebels and Keywords for Children's Literature. His work Was the Cat in the Hat Black? critically examines racism in children's literature, while Crockett Johnson's Barnaby volumes explore mid-20th century political satire and LGBTQ+ history through comic strips. He has received numerous awards, including the PROSE Award and KSU's Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award.
