Philip McCallion is Professor and Director of the School of Social Work within the College of Public Health at Temple University. He is also Director of the ABA Centers of America Autism Lab and co-Principal Investigator of the Intellectual Disability Supplement to the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (IDS-TILDA). He serves as a national consultant for the National Alzheimer's and Dementia Resource Center.
His education includes a PhD and MSW from the University at Albany and a BSSc in Social Studies from Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland.
McCallion’s research focuses on aging, intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), autism, dementia, and health equity. He has led groundbreaking work in systems integration, evidence-based interventions, community-based participatory research, and service redesign for vulnerable populations. His expertise spans translational research, caregiver support, palliative care, and health promotion tailored to individuals with IDD and autism across the lifespan.
The 15 most recent publications reflect a strong emphasis on longitudinal studies, health disparities, aging with disability, dementia diagnosis, sedentary behavior, medication management, and the psychosocial impacts of the pandemic. McCallion has secured over $50 million in grants and contracts, supporting large-scale longitudinal studies like IDS-TILDA and demonstration projects on aging-prepared communities. He mentors numerous researchers and students, leads international training initiatives, and provides technical assistance in eight countries. His work includes developing the COMPASS EBI data system and offering master training in National DPP and Making the Connection programs.
He leads the ABA Centers of America Autism Lab and collaborates extensively through IDS-TILDA, a national study in Ireland tracking health and aging in adults with intellectual disabilities. His team conducts multidisciplinary research involving epidemiology, behavioral science, pharmacy, and public policy, contributing to global best practices in disability-inclusive health systems.
