Philip Loring is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Guelph's Department of Geography, Environment & Geomatics, within the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. His research focuses on food security and sovereignty, community sustainability, and environmental change, with a particular emphasis on coastal communities in Alaska, Arctic Canada, Western Canada, Ecuador, and Saskatchewan. He investigates how environmental and social dynamics influence community resilience and governance.

His expertise spans environmental governance, fisheries management, and the interplay of conflict and diversity in resource-dependent communities. He leads or co-leads several initiatives, including the 'human activity' theme for MEOPAR, the 'Fish as Food' cluster for Too Big to Ignore Network, and governance roles in the Rural Policy Learning Commons. He is also President of the Arctic Division of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
