Philip Levy is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of South Florida, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. His work bridges historical archaeology, public history, and the study of early American landscapes.
Education: Ph.D., The College of William and Mary (2001).
Research focuses on historical landscapes, memory studies (particularly George Washington's legacy), and the impact of climate change on cultural heritage sites. He directs excavations at Ferry Farm (George Washington’s childhood home) and collaborates with the National Park Service on interpretive frameworks. His teaching spans public history, historical archaeology, and topics like American slavery and war studies.
Over 200 USF students have participated in his summer field schools at Ferry Farm. He emphasizes hands-on training and career mentorship, with many students becoming professionals in historical archaeology and public history.
