Dr. Jason Boroughs serves as a Senior Fellow at the Capitol Archaeological Institute and Principal Archaeologist at George Washington’s Mount Vernon since 2016. With 30 years of field experience in historic site excavations across the Chesapeake Bay region, New England, and the Caribbean, his research focuses on Chesapeake plantation communities through the lenses of enslavement and emancipation. He holds a B.A. from the University of Virginia and an M.A./Ph.D. from the College of William and Mary.
His research interests include social transformations in the African-Atlantic diaspora, landscape archaeology, and the politics of heritage memory. He has held teaching and research roles at institutions such as the College of William and Mary and Salisbury University. Dr. Boroughs directs an annual field program in historical archaeology at Mount Vernon for George Washington University students (ANTH 3835). His work has been featured in major media outlets including the Washington Post, New York Times, and National Public Radio.
