Philip Keller is a Tutor in the Department of Music at Durham University. He is currently undertaking a part-time doctorate in the same department, supervised by Professor Bennett Zon and Associate Professor Katherine Hambridge. His research examines how Jewish identity challenges influenced musicologists and music theorists in late nineteenth-century German-speaking regions, with a focus on Vienna. Philip also serves as Treasurer of the International Nineteenth Century Studies Association (INCSA) and is a trustee for multiple performing arts organizations.
Education:
- BA in Economics (1987)
- MA in Music (2022) – Dissertation: Interaction between musical and choreographic form in ballet
Research Interests: Philip's interdisciplinary research spans aesthetics, socio-cultural studies of Jewish assimilation in German-speaking contexts, historical musicology, and nineteenth-century intellectual history, with specific emphasis on identity politics in music theory.
Professional Activities: As an active contributor to the arts community, Philip conducts amateur orchestras in London and Durham while supporting performing arts organizations through trusteeship roles.
