He currently directs CUNY's Advanced Research Collaborative and serves as book review editor for Sociological Forum since 2005.
His research focuses on immigration studies, particularly examining second-generation immigrants, urban sociology, and comparative migration patterns. Kasinitz investigates how historical memory intersects with contemporary migration flows in the US and Europe, with recent attention to how the COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped public spaces and newcomer integration processes.
His scholarly contributions demonstrate consistent focus on immigrant integration, urban diversity, and transnational communities. The publications reflect evolving methodological approaches from large-scale comparative studies to more nuanced examinations of cultural expressions like music within migrant communities.
