Tahseen Shams is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on international migration, race/ethnicity, and religion, particularly examining how geopolitical contexts influence South Asian Muslim immigrants in the West. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from UCLA (2018), an M.A. from UCLA (2014), and a B.S. from the University of Southern Mississippi (2012).
Shams has authored the acclaimed book Here, There, and Elsewhere: The Making of Immigrant Identities in a Globalized World, which has received multiple awards, including the ASA's Thomas and Znaniecki Book Award and the Asian America Book Award. His current research explores interfaith/interracial relationships among South Asian Muslim immigrants in Canada, revealing how geopolitics shapes intimate life choices.
