Philip Jerand is an Associate Professor in Archaeology at Umeå University's Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies. His research focuses on geoarchaeology, environmental archaeology, and Arctic studies, with particular emphasis on soil and sediment analysis to understand human-environment interactions. He holds a B.A. and M.A. in Archaeology and Environmental Archaeology from Umeå University, and defended his doctoral thesis in 2023. His work spans academic research, teaching, and consultancy, with involvement in projects across northern Sweden, Norway, and the Scandinavian west coast.
Research interests include cultural heritage management, the impacts of climate change on Arctic landscapes, and the legacy of ecological imperialism. He has contributed to infrastructure archaeology projects like E18 Retvet-Vinterbro and studies of prehistoric settlement patterns in Fennoscandia. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses on Mesolithic/Neolithic Scandinavia, environmental archaeology, and laboratory methods for cultural heritage preservation.
His recent work highlights the vulnerability of Arctic monuments to environmental changes and explores geoarchaeological methods to analyze past human adaptations. He collaborates with regional and national cultural heritage agencies, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to environmental and archaeological challenges.
