Philip Howes

Dr. Philip Howes is an Assistant Professor in Engineering (Engineering and Design) at the University of Sussex's School of Engineering and Informatics. He holds a PhD in nanomaterials chemistry from King’s College London and has held positions at University College London, Imperial College London, ETH Zürich (as a Marie Skłodowska Curie Fellow), and London South Bank University. His research focuses on two key areas: engineering functional nanoparticles for applications in healthcare, energy, and transport, and mitigating particle pollution's environmental and health impacts. His work combines materials chemistry with microfluidic technology to advance nanomaterial synthesis efficiency and performance.

His educational background includes a Physics undergraduate degree, followed by advanced studies in nanomaterials and interdisciplinary engineering. He currently teaches courses in Mathematics for Product Design, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, and previously covered Thermodynamics, Engineering Design, and Innovation. He convenes the MSc Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Apprenticeship program.

Dr. Howes has been recognized with the Marie Skłodowska Curie Individual Fellowship. His research spans topics like colloidal quantum dots, nanoparticle biosensors, and microfluidic systems for materials synthesis. Recent publications highlight innovations in autonomous targeting of nanomaterials, flow chemistry optimization, and strain-promoted cycloadditions in lipid bilayers.

His lab addresses grand challenges such as sustainable energy solutions and pollution mitigation through interdisciplinary approaches. He collaborates on projects ranging from CRISPR-based diagnostics to laser additive manufacturing of aluminum alloys.
