Dr. Philip Hiscock is a Professor in the Department of Folklore at Memorial University of Newfoundland, affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds degrees from Memorial University (B.A., M.A., Ph.D.). His research focuses on Newfoundland and Labrador folklore, language, folksong, and the intersection of folklore with popular culture. He previously served as Archivist of the MUN Folklore and Language Archive and is a managing member of the English Language Research Centre. His recent work includes an SSHRC-funded online dialect atlas of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Teaching includes regional courses on Newfoundland and Labrador, and thematic courses on language, archiving, fieldwork, and folklore genres. He has supervised graduate theses on topics such as alternative music in St. John's, intentional communities, and post-Moratorium fishermen's choirs.
