Philip Edward Jones

Philip Edward Jones is an Associate Professor of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Delaware, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. He serves as Research Director for the Center for Political Communication and Editor-in-Chief of Public Opinion Quarterly. His research focuses on LGBTQ politics, public opinion, and political behavior, with a particular emphasis on straight attitudes toward LGBTQ rights and the political behavior of LGBTQ communities.

Dr. Jones holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard University (2009) and a BA in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from Oxford University (2003). His work bridges academic and applied research, addressing topics such as transgender rights, campaign communication, and democratic accountability.

His research highlights how group labels, elite cues, and political awareness shape public opinion on LGBTQ issues. Recent findings include the impact of descriptive representation of LGBTQ members of Congress and the role of respectability politics in heterosexual support for LGB rights.

Awarded the APSA 2018 Bailey Award for best conference paper on LGBTQ politics, his work appears in top journals like American Politics Research, Journal of Politics, and Public Opinion Quarterly. He teaches courses on American politics, LGBTQ politics, and public opinion.
