Philip E Empey

Dr. Philip E. Empey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy and Therapeutics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. He serves as Associate Director for Pharmacogenomics at the Pitt/UPMC Institute for Precision Medicine, leading initiatives in clinical, research, and educational programs. His work includes directing the University of Pittsburgh-Thermo Fisher Scientific Pharmacogenomics Center of Excellence, deploying large-scale preemptive pharmacogenomic testing across over 150,000 patients in western Pennsylvania. Dr. Empey's research focuses on improving medication outcomes in critically ill patients through NIH-funded clinical and translational studies in pharmacogenomics and critical care. He holds a PharmD from the University of Rhode Island, a PhD in Clinical Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Kentucky, and completed PGY1/PYG2 residencies in Pharmacy Practice and Critical Care at the University of Kentucky. Notable awards include the 2021 Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the 2018 Chancellor’s Distinguished Teacher Award.

Research Interests: Pharmacogenomics, critical care, clinical pharmaceutical sciences, precision medicine, population-scale testing.
