Philip Balma is an Associate Professor of Italian Literary and Cultural Studies at the University of Connecticut-Storrs, coordinating the Italian language program. He holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University (2007). His research focuses on modern Italian literature/film, Jewish experiences in Italophone media, translation theory, postcolonial studies, WWII representations, and dialect literature. He has taught at Indiana University, Notre Dame, and the University of Georgia.
Key research areas include Holocaust portrayals in Italian cinema, postcolonial Italy, and translation challenges for dialectal works. His publications span journals like Italica and Translation Review, with notable works analyzing Gillo Pontecorvo’s films and Roberto Rossellini’s historical accuracy. He co-authored Streetwise Italian (2005), a guide to Italian slang.
