Philip Armstrong is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases at the Yale School of Public Health. His research focuses on arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) and vector biology, with particular emphasis on the molecular evolution and ecology of mosquito- and tick-borne viruses transmitted in the northeastern United States.
Dr. Armstrong earned his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz and his doctoral degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. He joined the faculty at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in 2004 to participate in the statewide mosquito surveillance program and develop his research program on arboviruses. His current research examines the molecular evolution and ecology of mosquito- and tick-borne viruses including eastern equine encephalitis virus, West Nile virus, and Powassan virus.
Dr. Armstrong directs the Connecticut Mosquito and Arbovirus Surveillance Program, which monitors mosquito populations and arbovirus activity at 91 locations statewide. His laboratory evaluates the role of different mosquito species as vectors of arboviruses by determining their vector competence, host-feeding, and infection patterns in nature. His work involves comparing genetic relationships of viruses to track the origin, spread, and long-term persistence of strains involved in disease outbreaks.
Analysis of Dr. Armstrong's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on vector-borne disease transmission dynamics. His work examines host-feeding behavior of mosquitoes across different geographic regions, the impact of multiple bloodmeals on arbovirus dissemination, and the isolation and characterization of novel viruses. His research integrates field surveillance with laboratory studies to understand the complex interactions between vectors, pathogens, and hosts.
