Philip Armstrong is a Professor and Chair of Comparative Studies at The Ohio State University, affiliated with the Department of History of Art within the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a PhD in History of Art from UCLA. His research focuses on visual culture, political theory, and social theory, with notable contributions to contemporary art criticism and philosophical interpretations of art practices. Armstrong has authored influential books like Reticulations: Jean-Luc Nancy and the Networks of the Political and co-edited volumes such as As Painting: Division and Displacement.
His work bridges art and philosophy, particularly through translations of Jean-Luc Nancy and Michel Parmentier. Collaborative projects include the “Precarity and Social Contract” initiative and the “Emergence of the Tableau” study. Recent writings explore themes like “Precarity’s Prayers” and “Buccal Intimacies,” reflecting his engagement with contemporary social and cultural dynamics. Armstrong’s publications span journals like Parallax and Journal of Visual Culture, emphasizing interdisciplinary dialogue.
Armstrong has received grants from the OSU Research and Creative Activity in the Arts and Humanities program.
