Dr. Philip Allsopp is a Senior Lecturer in Human Nutrition at Ulster University's School of Biomedical Sciences. Based at the Coleraine Campus, he leads research through the Biomedical Sciences Research group focused on nutritional biochemistry and health applications.
His research examines:
- Polyunsaturated fatty acids' effects on bone health, immunity, and child development
- Gut microbiota modulation through marine bioactives and prebiotics
- Sustainable food systems and circular economy approaches
- Nutritional interventions for chronic disease prevention
Recent publications demonstrate consistent focus on fatty acid metabolism (especially omega-3s), gut health, and lifecycle nutrition, with emerging work in sustainable food technology. His interdisciplinary approach bridges nutrition science, food technology, and public health.
Dr. Allsopp actively contributes to significant projects including:
- Co-Centre for Sustainable Food Systems (DAERA-funded, 2024-2029)
- Agri-food Circular Economy technological transformation (2025-2029)
- Cardiovascular disease prevention through omega-3 interventions (2025-2027)
He currently mentors four PhD candidates investigating nutritional biochemistry, and collaborates extensively with research associates focused on fish consumption interventions and nutritional biomarkers.
