Phil Warsaw is an Assistant Professor of Ecological Economics and Environmental Justice in the Department of Community Sustainability at Michigan State University (MSU), part of the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. He holds a PhD in Economics and an MS in Environment and Resources from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to MSU, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems at UW-Madison.
His research focuses on environmental justice, economic development, and sustainability, employing interdisciplinary methods from economics and social sciences. Current projects include studying urban environmental quality and gentrification in Lansing and Milwaukee, exploring diversity in natural resource disciplines, and developing data tools for hospitals to assess regional food purchasing impacts.
Recent work emphasizes equity in food systems, including collaborations with hospitals and farmers markets. His publications address topics like food access, market resilience, and energy justice, reflecting a commitment to actionable solutions for systemic inequities.
Warsaw is affiliated with MSU’s Center for Regional Food Systems and Institute for Integrative Technology. His work bridges academia and practice, aiming to advance sustainability through equitable economic frameworks and community-driven initiatives.
