Phil Tiemeyer is an Associate Professor in History and Director of Security Studies at Kansas State University. His research examines intersections of gender, sexuality, aviation, labor, and global politics during the Cold War era and beyond. His office is located in Calvin Hall.
His publications explore how aviation served as a site for gender politics, labor struggles, and international competition. His award-winning book 'Plane Queer' won the 2015 John Boswell Prize for LGBT history. Current research investigates flight attendants as symbols of national identity and modernity in both Western and non-Western contexts.
Teaching: Tiemeyer teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including History of the United States Since 1877, Race and US Foreign Policy, Cold War Cultures, and seminars on gender/sexuality history. He also directs the Security Studies methodology courses.
