Prof Phil Taylor is the founding Head of Applied BioSciences at Macquarie University and holds a Distinguished Professor title. He leads a research enterprise integrating industry priorities with university research. Affiliations include the ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre for Fruit Fly Biosecurity and the Data Horizons Research Centre.
Education: PhD in Zoology (University of Canterbury, 1997) and B Hort Sci Hons (University of Canterbury, 1991). External roles include Research Fellowships at the University of Cincinnati (2000–2002), Ben-Gurion University (1999), and Hebrew University (1996–1999), as well as a Lecturer position at Alma College (2000).
Research focuses on sustainable pest management, particularly Queensland fruit fly control. Key areas include Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) foundations and lure development. Projects include Pest READI for agroecological decision intelligence, biopesticide efficacy studies, and AI-driven pest monitoring systems.
Recent articles emphasize pheromone biology, genomic studies of entomopathogenic fungi, and toxin discovery for invasive pests. Grants and collaborations span international institutions, addressing global pest challenges.
