Phil Ring

Phil Ring serves as a Teacher of Applied Music (Guitar) in the Department of Music at Washington University in St. Louis, actively teaching and performing since 2005 across St. Louis and the United States.

Education: Ring earned both his Bachelor of Music (B.M.) and Master of Music (M.M.) in Jazz Performance from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Performance and Teaching Focus: Described as a “musical chameleon,” he excels in jazz, R&B, funk, rock, metal, and americana. His pedagogy emphasizes technical fundamentals while nurturing individual creative expression in guitar, bass, and general music instruction. He continues his own development through studies with jazz guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg.

Ensembles and Recognition: As founding member of progressive bands The Gorge and Thor Axe, he released acclaimed albums “Thousand Year Fire” (2016) and “Solar Rips” (2022). He has toured nationally and shared stages with acts including The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Sword, and Between The Buried and Me.
