Phil Nimmons (1923–) is a renowned Canadian composer, arranger, bandleader, clarinetist, and educator. He holds a BA from the University of British Columbia (1944) and an honorary Doctor of Music from McGill University (2011). Nimmons is celebrated for pioneering Canadian jazz through his innovative big band compositions and educational initiatives. His career spans teaching roles at the University of Toronto (director emeritus of jazz studies), University of Western Ontario, and Banff School of Fine Arts. He co-founded jazz programs at multiple institutions and was a key figure in the Canadian League of Composers.
Research interests focus on jazz composition, orchestration, and music education. Notable works include Transformations (1975), Invocation (1976), and the Olympic-themed The Torch (1988). Nimmons has received prestigious awards such as the Juno Award (1977) and Officer of the Order of Canada (1993). His bands performed nationally and internationally, blending classical and jazz traditions.
Teaching contributions include founding jazz programs at Banff, University of Toronto, and Courtney Youth Music Centre.
