Professor Phil Murray is an Honorary Professor in Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the Royal Agricultural University. He retired from Rothamsted Research in 2017 and currently holds roles such as Visiting Professor at the University of Plymouth (2012–2017) and Guest Professor at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. His career spans over 34 years as a Principal Scientist at Rothamsted Research.
Murray's qualifications include a PhD in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Bristol and a BSc (Hons) in Applied Biology from Liverpool Polytechnic. His research focuses on soil biology, grassland ecology, and sustainable agriculture, with over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Key research interests include soil microbial dynamics, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, grassland management, and climate change impacts on soil carbon. Recent work explores reforestation effects on soil fauna, nitrogen transfer mechanisms in pastures, and spatial variations in mycorrhizal communities.
Murray has contributed to international initiatives like the Academic Committee of Hulunbeir Grassland Ecosystem and the British Grassland Society. His work emphasizes sustainable agricultural practices, ecosystem resilience, and the application of advanced modeling tools in agroecosystems.
