Dr. Petra Welzel is a research scientist and co-speaker of the research area "Matrix & Tissue Engineering" at the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden (IPF), working within the Research Division Polymer Biomaterials Science, Department B2. She leads research on developing cell-instructive macroporous and multiphasic hydrogel materials for therapeutic applications and advanced tissue/disease modeling.
Her research focuses on creating biohybrid cryogels and hydrogels that serve as delivery systems for signaling proteins, growth factors, and drugs. These materials are engineered to have tunable properties including elasticity, degradability, and specific binding capabilities that respond to cellular or external triggers. Dr. Welzel's work demonstrates significant applications in multiple medical fields including corneal tissue engineering, diabetes treatment through islet encapsulation, cancer research through precision hydrogels for studying cancer cell mechanobiology, and neural tissue engineering for brain applications.
Her scientific contributions include:
- Development of FXa-responsive hydrogels for corneal endothelial tissue engineering
- Innovative approaches to islet macroencapsulation for diabetes treatment
- Precision hydrogels for studying cancer cell mechanobiology and metastasis
- Bone marrow niche mimetics using cryogel architecture
- Advanced delivery systems for neural applications and brain tissue models
- Multiphasic microgel-in-gel materials to recapitulate cellular microenvironments
Dr. Welzel maintains an active research program with numerous collaborations, particularly with Prof. C. Werner and colleagues across the institute, focusing on translating biomaterials research into practical medical applications. Her work bridges polymer science with biomedical engineering to create innovative solutions for regenerative medicine and disease modeling.
