Petra Stoerig is a Professor and Chair of Experimental Biological Psychology at the Institute of Experimental Psychology, Heinrich-Heine-University, Düsseldorf, since 1997. She held an a.o. Professor position in Medical Psychology and Neurophilosophy at Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich (1996-1997). Her academic career includes prestigious roles such as Heisenberg-Fellowship (1992-1996) and post-doctoral fellowships at Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich (1982-1986).
Her research focuses on consciousness, visual neuroscience, blindsight, sensory substitution for the blind, synaesthesia, and neurophilosophy. These areas integrate cognitive, perceptual, and philosophical inquiries into the human mind.
Petra Stoerig has held significant leadership roles in academic societies, including serving as President of the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness (2004) and President of the European Brain and Behaviour Society (1996-1998). She is a founding member of the European Dana Alliance for the Brain (since 1996) and a Founding and Honorary Member of the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness (since 1994).
She has supervised numerous Ph.D. students, including Valentina Niccolai (2011), Andrew Reid (2010), and Guido Hesselmann (2005), contributing to the training of emerging scholars in her field.
