Professor Petra Meier is a leading academic in public health, currently holding the Professor of Public Health position at the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) at the University of Sheffield and serving as Head of the Sheffield Alcohol Research Group. She also holds an Honorary Professor title at the Institute for Social Marketing, University of Stirling.
- Studied psychology at the University of Heidelberg, Germany
- Completed an MSc by Research in Child Health at the University of Hertfordshire
- Earned a PhD in Epidemiology & Health Sciences at the University of Manchester
Her research focuses on alcohol policy effectiveness, including pricing, marketing, and availability regulations. She investigates determinants of substance use and addiction, evaluates substance misuse treatment outcomes, and develops interventions to address health inequalities. Her work has significantly influenced debates on minimum unit pricing in the UK and internationally through the Sheffield Alcohol Policy Model.
She directs the Wellcome Trust-funded DTC in Public Health Economics and Decision Science and serves on the NIHR Public Health Research Funding Board, demonstrating leadership in grant management and academic governance.
