Dr. Petra Klusmeyer holds an academic position in Sound Studies at the Bremen University of the Arts, where she teaches studio-based and theory-led courses and supervises master’s students in the Faculty of Art and Design. She earned an MFA in Fine Arts (1999) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and completed her doctoral thesis on sound and aesthetics in art research and philosophy in 2019 at Leiden University under Prof. Dr. Marcel Cobussen and Dr. Sher Doruff. Her work bridges sound art, philosophy, and interdisciplinary practices.

Her research focuses on sound as a transient medium, integrating philosophical and sociocultural perspectives. She explores sonic practices in art, design, and music through research-creation, emphasizing listening, observation, and experimental methods. Her artworks have been exhibited globally, including at ZKM Karlsruhe, Podewil Berlin, and Weserburg Bremen, and her sound works are published on Staalplaat and her independent label.
Key Achievements:
- Curated Sonic Peripheries (2008–2013), a series on contemporary sound practices collaborating with international artists.
- Awarded prestigious grants: GEDOK grants, Joan Mitchell Foundation grant, and John Quincy Adams Fellowship.
Teaching & Mentorship: Currently mentors master’s students and teaches Mentoring Master Plenary Sound and Research-Creation, focusing on digital media, media theory, and interdisciplinary approaches.
She lives in Bremen, having previously resided in the US from 1988–2001.
