Peter Zeitler is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Lehigh University, where he has been a faculty member since 1988. He serves as chair of Lehigh's Faculty Senate and previously served as South Mountain College's first director in 2007 and as EES department chair.
His educational background includes:
- A.B. (1978) in Earth Sciences from Dartmouth
- M.A. (1980) in Geology from Dartmouth
- Ph.D. (1983) in Geology from Dartmouth
- Research Fellow (1983-1987) at the Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University
Peter Zeitler's research focuses on developing methods for using geochronology to measure the temperature histories of rocks, with applications to the co-evolution of the crust and the land surface. His work involves technique development in methods of analysis and numerical modeling in the lab, and decades of field work in mountain landscapes in the Himalaya, Tibet, and Mongolia. More recently, he has worked on applications of thermochronology to deep time in continental interiors, examining features like the Great Unconformity. His research has evolved from studying active mountain ranges to examining the thermal histories of stable continental regions.
Peter Zeitler has received several prestigious awards including:
- 2019 Lehigh University Libsch Research Award
- 2016 Dodson Prize in Thermochronology from the International Standing Committee on Thermochronology
- 2006-2016 Lehigh University Iacocca Professorship
- 2013 Fellow of the American Geophysical Union
As an educator, Zeitler has taught courses including ECK 081 Eckardt Seminar, EES 80 (Introduction to the Earth System), EES 426 (Tectonic Processes), and EES 429 (Methods and Applications of Geochronology). His academic journey began as a first-generation college student born to German immigrants, and he has maintained a strong connection to international research, particularly in Asia.
