Peter Wikström is an Associate Professor of English Linguistics at Karlstad University, specializing in discourse analysis applied to digital and social media environments. He is a core member of the KuFo Research Group for Culture Studies and currently serves as Director of Studies for English, Spanish, and Intercultural Studies since 2024. His work integrates applied linguistic methods with media studies, focusing on topics such as public apologies, race discourse, and educational technology.
Education: Defended his doctoral dissertation i tweet like i talk: Aspects of speech and writing on Twitter in 2017. Previously held a postdoctoral position (2019) at Karlstad University’s Department of Educational Studies, researching smartphone use among Swedish secondary students.

- Digital ethnography of classroom smartphone use,

- Principal Investigator of Non-apologies: The reception of public apologies in mediated interaction in the era of #MeToo (Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, 2020–2024).
- Project researcher in The Swedish r-word: Uses and negotiations of race and racism in Swedish online discourse (Swedish Research Council, 2020–2024).
Publications: Over 30 peer-reviewed articles and books, including the 2023 monographs Race in Sweden (Routledge) and co-edited anthology The Deracialisation of Sweden (Karlstad University Press). Recent work emphasizes how Sweden’s colorblind ideology shapes racial discourse in media, education, and public policy.
Teaching: Leads advanced MA courses such as Language and Social Media and Critical Approaches to Language and Discourse, emphasizing discourse analysis and media literacy.
Labs/Teams: Primary affiliation with KuFo, collaborating with Tobias Hübinette, Catrin Lundström, and interdisciplinary teams on race studies and digital discourse projects.
