Prof. Dr. Peter Wick serves as Professor and Chair of New Testament Exegesis and Theology at the Faculty of Protestant Theology, Ruhr-Universität Bochum. His academic work spans biblical exegesis, early Christian ethics, and the intercultural dynamics between Judaism, Hellenism, and early Christianity.
Wick's primary research interests include:
- Exegetical studies of Paul, Matthew, Mark, John, and the Epistle of James
- The relationship between New Testament texts and ancient mystery religions
- Ethical frameworks in early Christianity and their contemporary relevance
- The dynamic embedding of early Christian communities within Jewish and Hellenistic contexts
- Age and aging in biblical literature
His scholarly output reveals a consistent focus on ethical dimensions across New Testament literature, with particular attention to how early Christian ethics interacted with surrounding cultural contexts. Wick employs multimethodological approaches combining historical, literary, and theological analysis to bridge ancient texts with modern ethical concerns. His recent work has increasingly examined age-related themes in biblical contexts and the ritual dimensions of early Christian worship practices.
Wick leads significant research initiatives including "Attraktivität durch Ethik" (Attractiveness through Ethics), "Neues Testament und Mysterien" (New Testament and Mysteries), and "Wechselwirkungen jüdischer, hellenistisch-römischer und christlicher Ethiken" (Interactions of Jewish, Hellenistic-Roman, and Christian Ethics). He is an active member of the CERES Research Department and a fellow of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg at Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
His academic leadership extends to editorial roles for scholarly publications and extensive collaboration with international colleagues. Wick maintains a strong commitment to pedagogical innovation, particularly through digital tools for biblical exegesis and multimethodological approaches to scriptural interpretation that acknowledge both historical contexts and contemporary significance.
