Peter W. Voorhees is the Frank C. Engelhart Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering, with a courtesy appointment in Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics. He co-directs the Center for Hierarchical Materials Design (CHiMaD) and leads the Voorhees Research Group, focusing on computational and experimental studies of phase transformations, solidification, and microstructural evolution. His academic career includes a Ph.D. and B.S. in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Research interests span phase transformation kinetics, computational modeling (e.g., phase field methods), and experimental techniques like 3D X-ray tomography. His group explores topics such as nanowire growth, oxide film formation, and additive manufacturing microstructure development. Collaborations with CHiMaD emphasize materials design for novel properties.
- Education: Ph.D. in Materials Engineering (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), B.S. in Physics (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute).
- Awards: American Academy of Arts and Sciences membership (2016), TMS Fellow (2013), APS Fellow (2005), and multiple teaching/excellence awards.
Professional service includes leadership roles in NSF initiatives and materials science education. His work bridges theory, simulation, and experimentation to advance understanding of materials behavior under varying conditions.
