Peter Törlind is an Assistant Professor in Product Innovation at Luleå University of Technology, working within the Department of Economics, Technology, Arts and Society. He serves as Business Manager for DEPICT and is recognized as an Excellent Teacher (awarded 2021). Törlind co-founded Alkit Communications, a university spin-off company specializing in communication applications.
His educational background includes an MSc in Mechanical Engineering (1996) and a PhD (2002) from Luleå University of Technology, with his doctoral thesis focusing on distributed engineering methods for product development. His core research areas span product innovation, distributed engineering, global product development, theme-based innovation, creativity, and physical environments for creative encounters.
Törlind's recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on the intersection of design thinking, additive manufacturing, and cognitive aspects of design. His work examines how educational backgrounds influence neural activity during ideation, investigates design-roughness-performance relationships in additive manufacturing, and explores effective design support systems. This research reflects his commitment to bridging theoretical design concepts with practical engineering applications.
Scientific Recognition:
- Excellent Teacher award (2021)
- CONEX fellow with 25,000 SEK grant (2004)
- Textbook author with works used across 7 universities
As an educator, Törlind supervises both PhD and Licentiate students while teaching numerous courses across undergraduate and graduate programs. His supervision record includes seven completed doctoral students and one current student. He has developed a separation system for Sweden's first nanosatellite (Munin), which was commercialized through Saab Ericson Space, demonstrating the practical impact of his research.
Törlind's work with the Polhem Laboratory continues his longstanding engagement with distributed engineering research, connecting academic inquiry with real-world product development challenges faced by global organizations in aerospace, automotive, and other complex manufacturing sectors.
