Peter Tompa is a Director at the VIB Department of Structural Biology in Brussels, Belgium, and holds the academic rank of Professor. He has been a Scientific Advisor (equivalent to professor) at the Institute of Enzymology in Budapest, Hungary since 2006, and previously served as Deputy Director there (2007-2009).

His research spans protein evolution, biophysics, and molecular biology, with a focus on molecular chaperones, protein structure and folding, and computational approaches to stress response systems. His work bridges biochemistry and bioinformatics.
Dr. Tompa has received multiple prestigious awards, including the Arnold Ipolyi Prize (2011), Straub Plaquette (2010), and Academy Prize (2010) in Hungary. He has also held consecutive Bolyai János research fellowships (1999-2002, 2003-2006) and received the Young Investigator Prize (1993).
He leads the Tompa Lab at the Structural Biology Research Center (SBRC) of Vrije Universiteit Brussel, which is affiliated with VIB. His career includes visiting scientist roles at Tokyo University (2000) and the University of Maryland (1988).
