Peter Svare Valeur is an Associate Professor at the University of Bergen's Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies. His research focuses on Romantic literature, literary criticism, and philosophical aesthetics, with a particular emphasis on aging in literature, German and French literature, and Enlightenment studies. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Oslo (2013) and has conducted extensive work on figures like Chateaubriand, Wordsworth, and Hegel. His recent publications explore themes such as old age, literary theory, and interdisciplinary approaches to Romanticism.
Key research areas include the intersection of philosophy and literature, the role of sound and voice in Romantic poetry, and aging as a thematic and critical lens. Valeur has contributed to projects like 'Historicizing the Aging Self,' funded by the Norwegian Research Council. He regularly publishes in journals such as Euphorion, Zeitschrift für Literaturwissenschaft und Linguistik, and Norwegian Journal of Literary Studies. His work often bridges literary analysis with historical and philosophical contexts, emphasizing close reading and intertextual methodologies.
Notable lectures include discussions on Maine de Biran’s diaries and aging, Enlightenment friendships (Mendelssohn and Lessing), and the aesthetics of rumor in Romanticism. Valeur is also involved in editorial work, co-editing volumes like Literature and Democracy (2024). His research highlights the enduring relevance of Romantic-era texts to contemporary debates on identity, ethics, and cultural memory.
