Peter Sutovsky

Peter Sutovsky is a Professor of Animal Sciences at the University of Missouri, with a joint appointment in Obstetrics, Gynecology & Women’s Health at the School of Medicine. He leads the Sutovsky Lab, focusing on reproductive biology, particularly the role of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) in gametogenesis, fertilization, and early embryonic development.

Education: PhD in Physiology of Reproduction from the Czech Academy of Sciences (1994), postdoctoral training at the University of Wisconsin and Oregon Health & Science University. He has held academic roles since 2001, advancing from Assistant to Full Professor.

Research Interests: Sperm biology, mitochondrial inheritance, assisted reproductive technologies (ART), and translational applications in livestock and human fertility. His work has revealed critical roles for UPS in sperm quality control, fertilization, and embryo development, including seminal contributions to understanding zygotic sperm mitophagy.

Awards: Over 50 international recognitions, including the USDA-NRI Discovery Award, AAAS Fellowship, and honorary doctorates from Czech University of Life Sciences and Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. He is a frequent keynote speaker and serves on editorial boards of journals like Cell & Tissue Research and Systems Biology in Reproductive Medicine.

Grants & Collaborations: Funded by USDA, NIH, and industry partners. Collaborations span global institutions, including projects on swine fertility, endometriosis models, and biomarker-based semen analysis.

Labs/Teams: Sutovsky Lab at MU focuses on proteomics, reproductive phenomics, and translational research. Active in developing technologies like sperm nanopurification kits and flow cytometric semen analysis tools.
