Dr. Peter Soar is a Lecturer in Computer Science at the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, University of Greenwich. He holds a BSc (1st class honours) in Mathematics from Greenwich, an MASt in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Cambridge, and earned his PhD in 2021 with research titled 'Integrating Structural Mechanics Into Microstructure Solidification Modelling'. As an active researcher in the Computational Science and Engineering Group, he combines Computing, Mathematics, Statistics, and Physics for multi-physics numerical modelling.
- Education: BSc Mathematics (University of Greenwich, 2013), MASt Mathematics and Statistics (University of Cambridge, part III of Mathematical Tripos), PhD (University of Greenwich, 2021)
Peter’s research focuses on integrating structural mechanics into computational models of microstructure solidification, particularly for additive manufacturing applications. His work explores three-dimensional effects in dendritic growth, thermoelectric magnetohydrodynamics, and data-driven approaches to material mechanics. He has published extensively on these topics in journals like Acta Materialia and Materials Science and Engineering.
- Research Trends: Multi-physics coupling, additive manufacturing, 3D microstructure simulation, machine learning for materials prediction, thermomechanical interactions, and phase field modelling
Peter bridges academic and industrial domains, having worked in data warehousing and visualization for an international procurement company before returning to academia. His current roles include teaching Mathematics and Computer Science modules while advancing computational methods for materials science.
Research Group: Active member of the Computational Science and Engineering Group at the University of Greenwich.
