Professor Peter Shapely is a Professor and Head of the School of History, Law, and Social Sciences at Bangor University. His research focuses on urban history, governance, and housing policy in 20th-century Britain. He holds a first-class degree in Politics and Modern History from Salford University and has been at Bangor since 1998. His work includes projects funded by the AHRC, British Academy, and Leverhulme Trust, exploring topics like urban deprivation, public-private partnerships, and tenant participation in housing policy.
He teaches courses such as 'Nazi State,' 'Twentieth Century Europe,' and 'Poverty, Society and the State' at the undergraduate level, and supervises PhD students researching topics like 1970s feminism, education for poor girls in Liverpool, and architectural patronage in the 19th century. His recent publications include Deprivation, State Interventions and Urban Communities in Britain, 1968–79 (2017) and Power, Policy and Consumers: Urban Culture and the Politics of Twentieth Century Housing (2007).
Professor Shapely has organized conferences on urban governance, devolution, and housing crises. His research highlights the evolution of urban policy and civic culture, with a focus on Manchester, Liverpool, and other industrial cities. He remains actively engaged in academic collaborations, including a partnership with China University of Political Science and Law (2024).
