Peter Schlosser is Vice President and Vice Provost of Global Futures at Arizona State University (ASU), overseeing the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory and the College of Global Futures. He holds joint appointments in multiple departments, including the School of Sustainability and School of Ocean Futures. A leading Earth scientist, his research focuses on water movement, ocean circulation, and sustainable development, with over 16,000 citations across 500+ publications.
Education: PhD in Environmental Physics (University of Heidelberg, 1985), followed by roles at Columbia University, including Maurice Ewing and J. Lamar Worzel Professor of Geophysics. His fieldwork spans Arctic, Antarctic, and tropical oceanographic expeditions.
Research Interests: Use of isotopes and trace substances to study water systems, ocean-atmosphere interactions, paleotemperature records via groundwater, and anthropogenic impacts. Key contributions include Arctic Observing Summit leadership and modeling groundwater dating techniques.
Awards: Fellow of AAAS, AGU, German National Academy of Sciences, and World Academy of Art and Science. Recognized for contributions to climate science and sustainability.
Leadership: Co-chair of The Earth League, advocating for global futures research. Past roles include Director of Research at Columbia’s Earth Institute and Chair of its faculty.
