Peter Riedlberger

Peter Riedlberger is a Professor of Late Antique History and Culture at the University of Bamberg, affiliated with the Humanities Faculty. He holds a triple doctorate in Latin Philology (Kiel), History of Sciences (Munich), and Law (Tübingen), reflecting his interdisciplinary expertise. He is also an Associated Member of the Laboratoire d'études sur les Monothéismes at CNRS, France.

Research Interests: His work spans Late Antique history, Latin philology, ancient law, prosopography, and the history of science. He specializes in the Acts of the Ecumenical Councils, Latin epic poetry (notably Gorippus), and the intellectual history of Late Antiquity. His research integrates philological, historical, and legal methodologies to reinterpret key texts and figures.

The 15 most recent publications illustrate a sustained focus on conciliar acts, legal documents, and Late Antique literature, showing a trajectory from textual commentary to large-scale documentary analysis funded by major ERC grants. Themes include legal procedure, redaction practices, onomastics, and the historical value of literary sources.

Riedlberger has led a diverse international research team and organized six major workshops on conciliar acts. He is an active advisor and mentor, with strong ties to academic institutions in France, Israel, Italy, and the UK. His teaching is highly rated, and he holds the Bavarian Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education. He leads the Institute of History and European Ethnology at Bamberg as Acting Director since 2022.

Labs and Teams: He directed the ERC-funded 'ACO' project team (2016–2021), which included researchers from Italy, France, Belgium, the UK, Poland, Spain, Cyprus, Ireland, and the Netherlands, fostering a highly international research environment focused on the digital and philological analysis of conciliar acts.
