معرفی
Peter R. Herman is a Full Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. His research focuses on laser technology, advanced beam delivery systems, and 3D nanofabrication for optical materials and microsystems.
- B.Eng. in Engineering Physics, McMaster University (1980)
- MASc (1982) and PhD (1986) in Physics, University of Toronto
- Postdoctoral Research, Osaka University (1987)
His group develops innovative methods for creating compact photonic devices like lightwave circuits, microfluidics, optofluidic systems, and smart medical catheters, with an emphasis on "Lab-on-a-fiber" and "Lab-in-a-film" microsystems. Research spans laser-plasma physics, x-ray lasers, and biophotonic sensors.
Scientific Awards:
- Fellow, Optical Society of America (2000)
- SPIE Conference Co-Chair & Committees
- IEEE Photonics Society Member
- Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) Infrastructure Award
- Ontario Innovation Trust (OIT) Infrastructure Award
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Fellowship (1987)
- NSERC Post-Doctoral Fellowship (1987)
- NSERC 1967 Science and Engineering Scholarship (1980-1985)
Professor Herman's laboratory investigates laser-material interactions to pioneer new manufacturing processes and optical device architectures. He has secured multiple grants including CFI/OIT Infrastructure Awards and NSERC funding.
