Peter Pormann is a Professor of Classics and Graeco-Arabic Studies at the University of Manchester, focusing on the transmission of Greek medical and scientific heritage into the Islamic world. His work bridges classical philology, history of medicine, and digital humanities.
- Education: D. Litt. and D. Phil. from the University of Oxford, MA in Islamic Studies from Leiden, and studies in Hamburg, Tübingen, and Paris.
Research interests include Graeco-Arabic studies, the history of medicine, and the use of information technologies to study ancient texts. His projects involve analyzing Arabic commentaries on Hippocratic Aphorisms and the Syriac Galen Palimpsest using advanced imaging techniques. Recent publications focus on digital editions of Galen’s works and classical reception in the Middle East.
Scientific awards include the Hellenic Foundation’s Doctoral Thesis Award (2003), British-Kuwait Friendship Society Book Prize (2008), Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Translation Award (2014), and the Philadelphia Constantinidis Essay Award (2015). He has secured major funding from the ERC, AHRC, and Wellcome Trust.
Collaborations span institutions like the University of Cairo, Université Paris Diderot, and the Warburg Institute, with involvement in projects like the Genealogies of Knowledge and the Syriac Galen Palimpsest.
