Peter Plumley is a Research Professor at Syracuse University, serving as Director of the Central New York Science & Engineering Fair (CNYSEF) and Director for the NASA NYS Space Grant Consortium. His expertise bridges Earth Science, technology, and education. He holds a B.S. in Geology from SUNY Albany (1974), an M.S. from Western Washington University (1980), and a Ph.D. in Earth Science from UC Santa Cruz (1984).
His research focuses on plate tectonics, paleomagnetic techniques applied to regional tectonic problems, and educational strategies to enhance secondary student motivation and the Science of Learning. Notable contributions include studies of Alaskan terrane displacement and structural analysis of the Brooks Range.
Publications emphasize paleomagnetic applications to tectonics and Quaternary geology. Awards include the 2003 College Educator of the Year and the 2019 Career Spark Award, recognizing his outreach and educational impact.
