Peter Newcombe is an Associate Professor at the School of Psychology, University of Queensland, with his office located in McElwain Building (Level 4, Room 403). His extensive research spans child psychology, health psychology, pediatric respiratory conditions, cross-cultural studies, and sports injury rehabilitation.
His research interests prominently feature pediatric respiratory health, particularly chronic cough assessment and quality of life measurement, evidenced by numerous collaborations with Anne B. Chang. Additional research streams include burn injury recovery, ACL reconstruction outcomes, cross-cultural psychology (with significant work in Sri Lanka and Indonesia), and family dynamics related to chronic illness. His cross-cultural work extends to Indigenous health research with Australian First Nations communities.
Professor Newcombe has published extensively with 115 journal articles, 28 conference papers, and 6 book chapters. His research demonstrates strong interdisciplinary collaboration across medicine, psychology, and public health. Recent work focuses on longitudinal studies of burn recovery (ABLE study), pediatric cough assessment tools, and Indigenous health quality of life metrics.
He has made significant contributions to clinical guidelines as part of the CHEST expert panel on cough management. His research methodology spans quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches, with recent innovative work using social media for longitudinal study retention.
