Dr. Imran Satia is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University, Canada, and affiliated with the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Cambridge in 2006, completed his specialist training in general internal medicine and respiratory medicine, and earned a PhD from the University of Manchester in 2017 focusing on the mechanisms of cough in asthma, for which he received the British Medical Association James Trust Award.
Dr. Satia's educational background includes:
- MB BChir, University of Cambridge (2003-2006)
- M.A. Neurophysiology, University of Cambridge (2004-2007)
- PhD, University of Manchester (2013-2017)
- B.A. Neuroscience, University of Cambridge (2000-2003)
His research focuses on respiratory diseases, particularly asthma, refractory chronic cough, and complex airways diseases. Dr. Satia has made significant contributions to understanding cough mechanisms, developing patient-reported outcome measures like the McMaster Cough Severity Questionnaire (MCSQ), and investigating the relationship between type 2 inflammation and cough outcomes. His work spans clinical epidemiology using the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, laboratory investigations of airway epithelium biology, and clinical trials of novel therapeutics.
Dr. Satia's recent publications reveal a strong focus on cough phenotyping, novel therapeutics including P2X3 receptor antagonists and biologics, and the development of improved assessment tools. His research demonstrates how chronic cough impacts quality of life, social participation, and healthcare utilization, while also exploring underlying mechanisms through airway inflammation studies and epithelial cell biology.
His notable achievements include:
- British Medical Association James Trust Award
- European Respiratory Society Respire 3 Marie Curie Post-Doctoral Fellowship
- Leadership of the Canadian James Lind Alliance Priority-Setting Partnership on chronic cough (CAN-COUGH)
- Contributions to European Respiratory Society guidelines on chronic cough
Dr. Satia consults on patients with asthma, refractory chronic cough, and complex airways diseases. He has led national initiatives to establish standards for specialist cough clinics through the NEUROCOUGH international Delphi study and has contributed to understanding the epidemiology of chronic cough including its relationship with mental health, geographical factors, and post-acute respiratory sequelae of COVID-19.
