Peter Merrotsy is a Professor in the Graduate School of Education at The University of Western Australia (UWA) and holds the title of Senior Honorary Research Fellow. He previously served as a Mathematics teacher and head teacher in rural New South Wales before joining the University of New England. He leads the GIFT Program (Gifted Indigenous: Focus on Talent), funded by BHP Billiton Group, which addresses educational needs of Indigenous gifted students.
Merrotsy's education background includes extensive teaching experience and academic roles. His research interests span creativity in mathematics, sociocultural aspects of education, and strategies for academically accelerating gifted learners. He has published widely on topics including Ramanujan's mathematical legacy, giftedness models (e.g., Gagne's differentiated framework), and the application of Dąbrowski's Theory of Positive Disintegration.
Key contributions include exploring cultural and social capital in talent development, underachievement in gifted students, and pedagogical innovations for creative problem-solving. He has supervised two research projects and authored/co-authored over 40 publications since 2003. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, blending education theory with historical analysis and psychological frameworks.
Notable grants include the 2013–2019 GIFT Program, which focuses on supporting Indigenous gifted students through culturally responsive strategies. His research often bridges historical case studies (e.g., Ramanujan) with contemporary educational challenges, advocating for inclusive policies and empathetic pedagogy.
