Peter McAvoy is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences. He also serves as a Senior Fellow for Law and the Environment, supporting the establishment of the Center for Water Policy and teaching water law. His work focuses on shaping water resource policies and programs for Wisconsin and the Great Lakes Region under the Great Lakes Compact.
McAvoy’s career includes senior roles in federal, state, and local governments, including as Vice President of the Sixteenth Street Community Health Center’s Department of Environmental Health. He led initiatives to reduce environmental health risks for children and revitalized Milwaukee’s Menomonee River Valley and Kinnickinnic River Corridor through public-private partnerships.
As former Regional Administrator for NOAA’s U.S. Coastal Management Program and lead negotiator for the U.S./Canada Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, he earned the EPA Bronze Medal. He also contributed to Wisconsin’s acid rain and soil conservation legislation in the 1980s.
