Peter Matthewson is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Healthcare and Social Practice, Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland, New Zealand, and serves as the Pākehā co-representative from the Council for Social Work Education in Aotearoa New Zealand on the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW) Board of Directors. He is also an executive member of the Council for Social Work Education and a registered social worker with the Social Workers Registration Board of New Zealand.
His educational qualifications include:
- Master of Philosophy in Social Policy and Social Work
- Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work
- Diploma in Social Sciences (Social Policy and Social Work)
- Bachelor of Arts
- Diploma in Teaching
Mr. Matthewson's research focuses on social work and poverty (particularly in mental health contexts), social work with rainbow communities, international social work frameworks, social policy analysis, and the interplay between personal identity and professional practice for social workers and students. His current work integrates these interests through teaching in the Bachelor of Social Practice program and PhD-level research on poverty-focused mental health interventions.
He actively contributes to the profession through membership in the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers and leadership in national social work education governance.
