Peter Mandler is Professor of Modern Cultural History at the University of Cambridge and Bailey College Lecturer at Gonville and Caius College. His research spans British cultural, intellectual, and social history since 1800, with emphasis on educational history and policy. He served as President of the Royal Historical Society (2012-2016) and President of the Historical Association (2020-2023).
Research interests focus on British cultural evolution, the history of humanities/social sciences, and postwar education transitions. His work investigates how social science language permeates everyday life through media and education. Current projects include analyzing universal secondary education in the UK and urban social landscapes in postwar Britain.
Publications consistently explore intersections of education, meritocracy, and cultural identity across British history. Recent works examine social mobility, publishing's political role, and historical responsibility. Awards include fellowship in both the British Academy and American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
