Peter Malliaras is a Professor in the Department of Physiotherapy at Monash University, within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. He is an active clinical researcher with a focus on tendinopathy, particularly in the Achilles, patellar, and rotator cuff tendons. He supervises PhD students and leads multiple national and international research projects.
His research expertise spans tendinopathy mechanisms, exercise-based rehabilitation, clinical trial design, and implementation of evidence into practice. He has contributed to shifting clinical paradigms, notably through a highly cited 2013 Sports Medicine review that challenged the dominance of eccentric exercise in tendinopathy management. His work emphasizes load adaptation, patient-centered outcomes, and innovative delivery methods such as telehealth.
The recent publications reflect a strong trajectory in digital health, imaging interpretation, and automated diagnostic tools, while maintaining a core focus on clinical effectiveness. His research integrates biomechanics, patient psychology, and health service delivery.
Prof. Malliaras has led or co-led significant funded projects including NHMRC and HCF-supported trials. He is the co-lead of the international Achilles tendinopathy consensus group, working on standardized outcomes and diagnostic criteria. His research is widely cited and has influenced clinical guidelines and professional training, including development of a course for the Australian Physiotherapy Association.
He is affiliated with research teams focused on musculoskeletal health, rehabilitation innovation, and telehealth scalability. His lab collaborates with engineers, clinicians, and health service researchers to develop and test novel interventions.
