Professor Peter Lee is an academic leader in applied ethics and criminology at the University of Portsmouth. He serves as Interim Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and holds a professorship in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. His research focuses on ethical dimensions of military technology, moral injury in law enforcement, and just war theories. Key affiliations include the Centre of Excellence in Defence, Risk & Resilience and the Centre for European & International Studies Research.
Research interests span autonomous weapon systems, drone warfare ethics, and the psychological impact of investigative work on police personnel. His work bridges philosophy, security studies, and practical policy, with over 40 peer-reviewed publications from 2010–2024. Notable outputs include frameworks for autonomous weapons governance and studies on moral injury among child abuse investigators.
He has contributed to parliamentary groups on drone warfare and authored books like Reaper Force: Inside Britain's Drone Wars. His interdisciplinary approach integrates military ethics with contemporary security challenges, emphasizing human dimensions in remote warfare.
